David, I had seen it. Very nice! I understand this is good for high school. I don't know if Jason Zinza intends for anyone, high school or college.

My friend who is Deaf and teaching ASL classes in colleges. One college she used Master ASL. She said it is a lot of English into ASL GLoss. It is different than Sign Naturally. She had a few negative about this in college. I hope she can mention this soon.

I would like to order it for my library. Possibly to use for high school or college if they require to use for ASL class.

Welcome to the blogging/vlogging world. We are happy to have more specialized vlogs.

I have seen the book myself and was impressed but all of the English translation / ASL glossing, there was what convinved me not to use that book in my ASL classes.

Students remember the signs much better if I don't use English or glossing in classroom.

Who is Jason Zinza? I checked the samples and it looked nice... colorful etc...

Should Signing Naturally curriculum improve to be more current to today's needs? Colors, DVD, etc??? I can imagine that it costs a lot of money to revamp that..

Glad to find you on Vlog. Soon one day I will join the bandwagon. :-)

I use M-ASL in my high school as supplement. I like it so much but lack of teacher instruction. Nevertheless I managed.
The school will not purchase this book because it don't have 2nd and 3rd year sequences. I think that book are excellent for high school levels rather than college because the pictures and people in DVD are youth-oriented. I would not use M-ASL on college levels with exception of brief introduction in level one. Unless Jason develops another sets that is gearing toward matured people minus glossing.

I heard SN are revising their curriculum and DVDs. It is supposed to be MUCH better, way better! I look forward to it.

I am very disappointed with that book because many signs are "hearing-like" and fingerspelling is incorrect. For example, a right-handed signer in the book fingerspelled words from right to left instead of left to right. It violates the key rule for fingerspelling and it will cause misunderstanding and confusion. The signers' postures look awkward and unnatural. Therefore, thumbs down to that book.

Well, it is time for us to stop and give business to hearing people. For long time, hearing people made a lot of money from ASL and Deaf people and in return, they rarely help us later on. We should stick and buy ASL materials produced by Deaf people

M ASL is useful in high school that I received remarks from high school teachers who use that book. However I tried once used it in college and failed badly because there are hearing like signs and I have to correct the students repeatedly, which is not appropriate to teach if these students are serious to learn ASL. We as Deaf people must provide proper sign language teaching because we are expert on that part. Jason Zinza is hearing... hmm...
I do not recommend you to use M ASL in university level.

I teach using this MASL. I personally it is very organized for the ACTFL standards.

David, glad you brought this up.

I don't personally know Jason Zinza, but he is a CODA and has a teamwork who is Deaf. I have met one of them before, and this is the resaon I want to inform you before misleading statement can give a false information. Please don't jump the conclusion.

This material seems very appropriate for high school students with a classroom management. The book teaches students to be responsible by studying (practicing) before immersion begins.

Yes, no instructional guidebook was provided, but if you are very comfortable with ASL and CULTURALLY DEAF oriented, it will be perfect for you to share with students. Let students learn the real thing.

The MASL did make a big success when it comes to teaching ASL, especially configuring ACTFL standards. Hat tip to Jason and his team for a hard work! And it's my opinion.

As nutshell, I really enjoy teaching the book because I am very comfortable with the book along with study of structure/linguistics. Perfect for high schoolers.

The Master ASL should not be used as a supplemental to other curriculum used in the same room. It would confuse students' learning management. Just my tip for some of you.

Now my question is....when will the level 2 be anticipated to release? Hope it will be coming soon than I thought.

Hope this helps?

Please, David, post your blog because we need more feedback/discussion on that particular subject: Master ASL.

I am a hearing ASL student at Gallaudet. I had Jason Zinza as a teacher for ASL 2 a few years back. He is hearing, but is a CODA and considers ASL to be his first language. He was an awesome teacher, tough, but awesome. My ASL improved so much. Personally I like this book better than SN, because it is clearer - the pictures make sense. And I feel it explains Deaf culture and offers lots of little tidbits that SN doesn't. When I was reading M - ASL there were lots of "aha" moments for me - like, "oh that's why that's signed like that". etc. I'm still taking classes at Gally, still using SN in classes, and still wish we could use something else. Thank goodness the ASL teachers at Gally add so much more to the curriculum then just the SN book.

I have some reservations about MASL.

1) Some signs are not properly used. Some signs are not what we use. Our job, as ASL teachers, is to protect ASL and we need to make sure our ASL students are not exposed to improper use of ASL - in all areas such as vocabulary, fingerspelling, etc.

2) The author of the book... In spite of his being organized and all that, we need to be careful with his hidden agenda. He is not someone we should trust easily.

Anonymous said...

Hidden agenda? He writes a textbook that I personally like and enjoy but do not teach yet, not until fall semester begins, and that makes him have a hidden agenda? Crab theory at work! I have seen him present many times at ASLTA and other workshops and his agenda is to improve the teaching of ASL, to give ASL teachers options for books, to give ASL students help learning our language. That is not a hidden agenda, that is an open agenda. Yes he is hearing but he signs better than many Deaf I know, he is a CODA and he knows what he talks about. We do need to protect ASL and Jason does an oustanding job doing that in MASL. My college is switching to MASL rather than SN after many hours debating and checking into the book, Jason, and teaching. What is wrong with having choices? Don't know about you but "anonymous" is less trustworthy than anonymous comment!

One of the comments mentioned that fingerspelling in the book's illustrations are in the wrong direction, however the book makes this distinction in the beginning of the book: "_Do not fingerspell letters moving across your torso._ Fingerspelling has been illustrated in Master ASL! from left to right to make it easier to use and understand" ... i.e. the book proposed it would be easier to read the illustration in the reading order of written English. However, it's probably silly to do this, as we wouldn't see this outside of the book. Just wanted to point out this wasn't an accident, just a bad choice.

I am a high school teacher of ASL. I am hearing and have studied in the field for over 17 years. Master ASL does have somethings that contradict the rules that we have all learned, such as the fingerspelling from right to left. I do like the assignments and activities in the book unlike Signing Naturally (serious lack of information for high school) which is what we use. I use many many resources in my classroom with the Signing Naturally curriculum.
I will say this though, in response to someones comment earlier, I don't think you have to be deaf to be able to properly teach ASL. Afterall - just because we are hearing and speak English doesn't mean we would be an effective teacher in an English classroom. I think it's great that people are trying to expand the variety that we have to pick from. Teaching from a curriculum that is 20 years old presents it's own problems... things have changed, terminology has changed... so we are teaching them OLD material. when it comes to county exams... the exam are created directly from the book... yes, we can tell them what is NEW, but that information is not what they tested on. Just my 2cents :) Thanks!

I have been reading some comments, and the one thing bothering me significantly is how people neglected to read the beginning of the book that explains the fingerspelling convention is different for people to read.

When one has dyslexia, for example, this change is very helpful as left and right and images aren't an issue in this case.

I just wanted to address the one thing that is immediately cleared up as soon as you read the explanations in the book. People seem to be bothered by it when they have only leafed through it and seen some pictures.
